Raiders vs Saints has always, throughout the years of the SIFL, been a great rivalry. In the first couple of years Raiders swept all before them, but the tide turned and Saints have enjoyed many years of domination. Hence yesterdays victory was an immensely sweet one having been such a long wait. Far be it though another ‘turning of the tide’ – Saints will tell you they were shorn of some key players and did not have a full strength team out. We too however were missing this seasons regular strike trio of Fred, Nico and Craig, but at full strength in defence.

Saints started very strongly and put us under a lot of pressure in the first ten minutes, but some assured defensive work and the presence of Angelo in goal saw us standing firm and surviving that initial onslaught. Perhaps we never recovered from that, as the first half was dominated by Saints and Raiders did not play the football we are capable of, wasting possession, not competing well enough, and playing too many long balls with Laurie having little chance to get in the game. Our best chance came from a corner with Andreas going close.

Half time arrived at 0-0 and after a pep talk from coach and captain Raiders emerged to what was a fantastic team performance in the second half. We managed to play a bit more football with the ball on the ground and got ourselves right back into the game. Indeed, for a good twenty minute spell we were ‘all over them’ as they struggled to get hold of the ball and Raiders pressure looked like a goal was coming. The best chance to take the lead came when Sascha drove into the box and laid a deft backheel into Jon’s path, his shot beating the keeper but cleared off the line, the rebound falling to Albin, but not kindly enough to provide a finish.

Towards the end of the second period Saints came back into it and were most threatening from set pieces – they never got in behind us all game. And then – the crowning moment, as a Raiders build up in the middle and pressure on the ball from Sascha saw the ball fall into Laurie’s path. Through on goal, he calmly angled his shot past the keeper, two minutes left on the clock, and I’ve never seen such a spontaneous celebration – what a moment! Of course, we very nearly then conceded in the dying seconds, thankfully the Saints striker scuffed his shot and it was safely in Angelo’s hands.

Saints were very gracious in defeat, and what a great day for Raiders.

We have to thank the entire squad for their performances on and off the pitch, and note that we do deserve an SIFL victory like this, and with the players, organisation and team spirit we have, look forward to competing in these kinds of games more regularly.

A special shout out to Seb who has waited 8 years across four different teams to beat the Saints! However, Andreas, Joey and Albin have never lost to them. I prefer the latter.

Team: Angelo, Seb, Tarek, Joey, Andreas, Paddy, Peter, Rasul, Henno, Sascha, Jon, Anthony, Albin, Laurie, Toby, Vu

A Raiders update, from the Christmas party to the start of 2012. . . . → Read More: Raiders update 2012

So another calendar year begins, the year of two thousand and twelve of our lord. But before reminiscing the glorious start to the year, we must wind back the clock to the Christmas party, and most importantly, this:

Yeehaw!

Raiders graced the five-star Legend with their presence. The clinking of wine glasses, light patter of conversation and amiable laughter soon gave way to a raucous, drunken din. Leading the way was Roberti, who found great entertainment in instructing the staff into fetching the most ridiculous food combinations possible. This culminated in the now famous ‘banana cake topped with liver pate’. Hoff volunteered to join Roberti in this gruesome taste test, and let me say, it was great – but that was probably more to do with a palette obliterated by 13 glasses of wine. Upon leaving, Roberti did what every red blooded male who has visited the Legend Hotel wants to – mounted the giant horse in the lobby. If this was in Europe or the US, he would have been tasered.

The night continued on to a German bar in the InterCon where much table banging, general incomprehensible shouting, and singing occurred. Singing was led by Koetz, who after popping out for 5 mins (judging by his condition on return it was to down a litre of gin) led the Raiders chants. And as they sang well past midnight in drunken haze, one Raider of Italian decent went to the toilet and never came back. And it wasn’t the goalkeeper.

Anyway, back to the football. Due to two cancellations beyond Raiders control we are still to play an SIFL league game this year. In their place two friendlies have been played – the first saw a convincing 5-1 victory and a Fred hatrick. I can’t provide much more detail as I wasn’t there. The second, I can, because I was. This one was a 2-1 victory. Having dominated the first half we endeavoured to concede a penalty and found ourselves 1-0 down. This only galvanized the team and we quickly turned it around. Craig scored twice before half time whilst Hoff and Dawson struck the frame of the goal. The second half saw a similar pattern and Craig nearly notched his hatrick after rounding the keeper and seeing his shot come back off the post from a narrow angle. The game should have been put to bed with a much more comfortable scoreline, but with a really solid defensive performance, the game was closed out and Raiders are unbeaten in 2012.

This will be truely put to the test in our next league encounter with Olympique de Saigon, coming after TET holidays.

An eventful game against Gemadept saw Raiders go down in the first half to a quickly taken free kick which was hotly debated.

The second half saw a Raiders onslaught. Nico was denied a blatant penalty after rounding the keeper, again much to the ire of the Raiders who were quickly losing their faith in yet another Phuoc Long referee. Raiders were quickly gaining confidence however and the first goal wasn’t long in coming. A corner resulted in Nico being hauled to ground and a penalty awarded. Laurie camly placed the spot-kick to the keepers right as he went the other way. Parity.

Raiders were now dominant and set about converting the game to a win. After more pressure and a nice passing move down the right Nico and Craig combined wonderfully and Nico slotted home a low shot into the bottom corner. 2-1 Raiders. There was little threat from Gemadept and Raiders kept a full concentration at the back. Numerous chances were spurned but eventually Nico notched a third after receiving a cross from the left and slamming home his shot.

Congrats boys on 3 points after the close and disappointing loss to NTV the week before.

Raiders secured a point with the last kick of the game, Johnston scoring the penalty. After dominating the game, it was the least we deserved. Craig hit the woodwork (again, again and again) – that’s three times and about 27 in total in all his Raiders games. Nico added a goal and takes his season tally to 3 leading the goalscoring charts. The league table currently looks like this:

League table 31/10/11

Hotshots have launched a protest that they should be 4th based on the same record and ‘H’ coming before ‘R’ in the alphabet.

Nest weekend sees Raiders play missing men Fairways who apparently have only played one game so far, although perhaps their result from the weekend against Gemadept is soon incoming. Either way, they lost 5-2 to the Fighting Cocks in their first game, so Raiders should be looking to get some more points on the board before a tough run of games up to Christmas.

Raiders began their SIFL league campaign with a 3-2 victory over Hiep Phu. An important 3 points to get the team off the mark for this league campaign.

Sascha, ever present in the midfield anchor role, scored with a nice outside of the boot shot low to the keepers left from the edge of the box. Nico followed up soon after, when a quick free kick led to a queue of Raiders waiting to score. Nico’s second was a beauty, beating the Hiep Phu defence and rounding the keeper to slot home.

So the top scorers table for the season starts, and this year we’ll also keep track of discipline….

Some interesting results this weekend, with Le Hot Shots getting smashed 6-1 by the amusingly named ‘Fighting Cocks’. Which leads me to the next game, the Saints beat Japan by 5-1, Japan will be keen to avoid last seasons performance of a goal difference of -47. That’s right, minus forty seven (in words).

Team: Angelo, Luke, Luke (no hair), Jonas (big), Jonas F, Brian (late), Peter, Vu, Rasul, Anthony, Minh, Nico, Craig, Toby, Sascha.

Whilst most other teams were taking a summer break, Raiders lived up to its members promise to provide an 11-a-side football match every weekend of the year (except a very few…). A sometimes threadbare squad continued to fly the flag and had some good friendly games with local teams including a 2-2 last Sunday (scorers Buisan R, Hoff J) and MOM Sebastian Brochard, a 3-2 victory the week before that and a 5-4 defeat three weeks ago (Kotze H and Harrold P amongst the scorers that day).

Raiders now go into pre-season looking forward to a new local rivalry with Saigon Hot Shots, the transformed team replacing Les Gaulois in this years SIFL. The game is on Sunday at Phuoc Long, KO 5.30pm.

Raiders end the 2010/2011 season with a victory over Gemadept. Raiders were 1-0 down at half time after a disjointed performance, but came back to lead 2-1 early in the second half through Dan and Floyd. Gemadept made it 2-2 with a penalty, and then Raiders earned their own penalty which Laurie duly tucked away for 3-2. Gemadept came back once more and scored a cracking third goal, but there was still time for Floyd to latch onto a through ball from Laurie and notch the winner. A great way to finish the season, well done boys!

Mango Bay organisers had secured a new venue for this year’s tournament and apparently much improved. Two 45×30 pitches were marked out on a large grass pitch carved out of the jungle, and specially made regulation sized goals had been manufactured. A small restaurant attached to the ‘stadium’ provided lunch and refreshments, the teams were reduced to sitting in the undergrowth with the fire ants or under small plants to get out of the sun – the only oversight promised for next year was umbrellas and decent areas of shade.

With only 6 teams making it to the tournament the schedule was a punishing one under the island sun, with two groups of three and each team playing each other twice. Raiders, with the smallest squad at the tournament of nine players, were not phased when drawn against local team Mango Bay and ‘Blue Fantastic’, another Phu Quoc team made up of locals. Starting at 9.30am Raiders made light work of the red Mango Bay team who despite being a usually nimble and skilled Vietnamese team couldn’t quite cope with our physical presence and method of play. Raiders’ first goal came after a Hoff free kick was parried out by their goalkeeper only to find Nick Canning on hand to bury the rebound. Raiders’ second goal was a first ever in the turkey for Walton, whose positioning was perfect as she found space at the near post to touch home. A perfect 3 point start as the game finished 2-1, although a daunting prospect ahead with the sun beating down relentlessly and Raiders already succumbing to their first injury with Loeffler hurting his back.

Next up was the blues, who Raiders dispatched with ease 3-0. Hoff managed to scramble the ball home from inside the box after it bounced loose and Bennit notched his first two of the tournament. Hoff picked up a heavy knock on the only square inch of body where it mattered, the old left big toe injury flared up. Now Raiders were down to seven for the next game with Loeffler still struggling. Yes, a no-subs sweaty nightmare.

Next up was a rematch with the reds, a true test of endurance and determination. The seven on the pitch performed fantastically well. Walton was a constant menace in midfield and in a complete role reversal, SHE was the one playing like a man whereas they were the ones being upended by her no nonsense tackling. Reds were desperate for the victory, in danger of elimination and being the home team, also playing for their goalkeeper who tragically died two weeks earlier in a motorbike accident. Sympathy wasn’t too apparent however as the game got a little fruity. The ref gave an utterly incredible call giving them a corner when Angelo has quite clearly caught the ball inside his post. Of course, this led to the goal that won them the game. Unbelievably frustrating and when Colebrissi was fouled but struggled on to win the ball making minimal contact, their player went down like a sack of shit. Boy who cried wolf maybe, Canning tried to help him up and he remained limp and pathetic like he’d just fallen out of his wheelchair. Canning then returned him to the ground using gravity alone. Watching spectators were not so happy and Canning and one of the tournament organisers swapped handbags. Raiders had announced to everyone that this was a friendly tournament, up to a point. Jonesy had also taken one in the nuts during that game, desperately looking at the bench where Loeffler and Hoff could only shrug their shoulders. He soldiered on.

All was not lost however, as results conspired against the reds and Raiders with 6 points already in the bag sat atop the group with the other two teams on 4. A draw with the blues would see Raiders through in first, a loss in second. With the result really not important, and even some discussions with Blue at half time, Raiders ‘conspired’ to lose this game 1-0 (we wanted to draw but it didn’t work out). Given the amount of football and injuries on a very hot morning, we were allowed that one. Loeffler had managed to play a part in the late morning and incredibly managed to cause problems upfront despite barely being able to run. I think he’s a robot. No tournament would be complete without a Wik special and he provided the first with a DDT, the first I’ve seen on a football pitch and very subtlety executed as is his speciality.

Hoff and Loeffler worked on their injuries over the lunch break through application of oils and creams, swallowing of tablets and massage, and possibly in the case of Loeffler by discreetly changing a circuit board, and attempted to get themselves back in the tournament. The semi was to be against another Vietnamese local team, Enterprise, with cramp-inducing 15 min halves.

With two subs back in play Raiders were once again able to rotate but still fell 1-0 behind. Then Colebrissi won Raiders a penalty by launching himself head first at a ball up for grabs floating over the penalty spot and ending upside down with someone elses shorts on his head. Bennit dispatched the spot clinically and 1-1 it stayed and the dreaded penalties. 5 penalties would be taken. Raiders kick first and Loeffler stepped up with a great shot to the keepers left who guessed the right way but couldn’t keep it out. Angelo casually stepped up to save their first one, I think he was humming the Italian national anthem. Routine stop from our solid-as-oak keeper. Bennit switched direction for his second penalty of the game and put Raiders 2-1 up, a well placed Enterprise shot made it 2-2. Hoff stepped up and partly buried his Bangkok demons by scoring, subsequently Curvetta made another great save, this time whilst inspecting his fingernails as he went down. It was down to Canning to put Raiders in the final and he emphatically did just that.

The final was against a team made up of French/international friends of Phu Quoc/HCMC with a Vietnamese compliment. After a tight first half where the opposition perhaps looked the better team it was 0-0. The opposition had a goalkeeper the size of a small car, and we all agreed they couldn’t be allowed to win the tournament with Jabba the Hut’s earthly replica between the sticks. Every single Raider was giving it everything after a very long day but things didn’t go to plan when we went 1-0 down. After a few minutes when Raiders were on the ropes Floyd found space to equalise, Raiders back in it. And then it all happened in a blur, 3 goals in less than 5 minutes. First Hoff beat his man in midfield and sent a low shot angled to the keepers left – saveable but a combination of 120 kilos of flesh trying to get down and a bumpy pitch, the ball found its way in. If that was slightly fortuitous then Loefflers goal was entirely out of talent – a volley that rifled in leaving the keeper motionless. Seconds later it was 4 as Loeffler got a head on one of our thousands of high balls played into the box, and finally it worked. Opposition laboured in the remaining minutes and pulled a goal back but of course, the game was already won. Wik added another beauty to his collection enraging a man-bull named Mike in the process.

I must say it was a tremendous achievement considering the opposition who throughout the day were no pushovers, considering the heat, considering we had the smallest squad and suffered injuries through the day…we still managed to come from behind in the semi and the final. Canning, Colebrissi, Wik and Jones providing a formidable presence in defence with Walton, Jones, Hoff, Bennit and Loeffler making up the rest, and of course Curvetta who was unrivalled in his goalkeeping. Each and every player contributed to Raiders bringing home the 2011 Mango Bay Cup to Bar Five for the rest of the team. Curvetta was honoured later as ‘Player of the Tournament’ and rightly so. Walton picked up sexiest player of the tournament, although Curvetta nearly won that too.

Viva Raiders, thanks to everyone who took part including the WAGS for constant ice tea refreshment and video camera footage, it was an honour.

It was a stiflingly hot afternoon down at Song Phat for this 2.30pm with the Saints. Like breathing dust whilst running through treacle. The same conditions for both sides however, and Raiders to be fair hardly deserved anything from the game. At one stage, coming back to 2-1 from 2-0 at half time, a comeback looked possibe, but Saints quickly snatched another goal. The 4th flattered them a bit, but Raiders need to play better, as we know we can, to get anything out of these games. However, onwards and upwards for the Raiders!

So, on to Bangkok.

A 12-minute-a-half-11-a-side tournament, with no offsides. I for one can’t wait to play! Raiders take a squad capable of, well, anything…on the pitch and off it.

Angelo (if back recovered)
Seb
Pierre K (ex Raiders capt)
Chris P
Jorge (in from Madrid)
Ryan
Justin
Hoff
Sascha
Laurie
Floyd
Dan B
Peter H
Zoe

Wish us luck!
